Catch pairing problems before ordering

Commercial door hardware looks interchangeable on a catalogue page, but the wrong combination of frame, closer and exit device causes callbacks: devices that will not latch, closers that rack a narrow stile, and frames that flex under an operator. This matcher helps you check a combination in seconds, before parts are specified or ordered.

Select the door and frame type, the closer or operator, and the exit device. The tool starts from a perfect score and subtracts for known conflicts, then explains each one in plain language.

The conflicts it checks

Narrow stile aluminum doors cannot take a standard mortise exit device, because the stile is too slim for the case. They need a narrow-stile device such as an Adams Rite style product. Knockdown hollow metal frames usually need head reinforcement before an automatic operator is mounted, since the header is not built to carry the load and vibration.

Concealed overhead closers in hollow metal assume factory frame preparation, so they must be called out in the hardware schedule rather than added on site. Fire-rated assemblies need exit hardware listed for the rated door so the label stays valid, which affects both the device model and how it is installed.

Examples of good and bad pairings

A welded hollow metal frame with a regular-arm surface closer and a rim exit device is a common, trouble-free combination for back-of-house and stair doors. A medium or wide stile aluminum entrance with a parallel-arm closer suits storefronts where the arm must stay out of the way of signage and glass. A knockdown frame paired with an automatic operator is where we most often see problems, because the header needs reinforcement before the operator is mounted.

If your combination scores below 100, read the notes under the result. Each one names the specific conflict and the usual fix, so you can raise it with your supplier or architect before a purchase order is issued.

Brands and everyday choices

We install and source hardware from the major commercial manufacturers, including Von Duprin exit devices, LCN and Dorma closers and operators, and Adams Rite storefront hardware. The tool is brand-neutral, but the pairing rules reflect how those products are normally applied in the GTA.

A high score does not guarantee a perfect fit. Handing, backset, door thickness, finish and electrical requirements still need to be confirmed against the actual openings and the manufacturer's preparation data.

From matcher to hardware schedule

If the matcher flags an issue, or you simply want a second set of eyes, send us the details below. We build a hardware schedule opening by opening and source most brands within 7 business days. The written CAD spec lists every preparation and listing so the product that arrives is the product that fits.

Door Hardware Compatibility Matcher: FAQ

Can I use a mortise exit device on an aluminum door?

Only on wide-stile or medium-stile doors that can house the case. Narrow stile doors need a narrow-stile device designed for that profile.

Do automatic operators work with any frame?

Not always. Knockdown hollow metal frames often need head reinforcement first, and the frame must be able to carry the operator load. We confirm this at the site measure.

Does fire exit hardware have to be specially listed?

Yes. Exit hardware on a fire-rated door must be listed for that application so the door label remains valid. We specify listed devices and install to NFPA 80.
