Commercial Door Hardware Compatibility Matrix
Our current frame, closer and exit device compatibility matrix for GTA commercial doors, with the brands we source within 7 business days this season.
Most hardware callbacks are compatibility problems. The part was fine; it just did not belong on that door. A rim exit device on a stile too narrow to hold it. A closer arm that clashes with an overhead stop. An electric strike in a frame that was never prepped for one. This is the fall 2026 edition of the compatibility matrix our hardware specialist uses when building hardware schedules for commercial door installation across Toronto and the GTA, plus the lines we are sourcing within 7 business days this season.
Start With the Door, Not the Catalogue
Every hardware decision starts with three facts about the opening:
- Door construction: hollow metal, aluminum stile and rail, wood, or glass
- Frame: hollow metal welded, hollow metal knockdown, or aluminum, and how it is prepped
- Rating: whether the opening is fire-rated, and at what duration
Get those right and the hardware choices narrow quickly.
Exit Devices by Door Type
| Door and frame | Single door | Pair without mullion | Rated? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hollow metal in HM frame | Rim device (Von Duprin 98/99 rim, Hager 4500) | Surface vertical rod | Fire exit hardware only, no dogging |
| Aluminum medium or wide stile | Rim or concealed vertical rod | Concealed vertical rod | Rarely rated |
| Aluminum narrow stile | Narrow stile device (Adams Rite 8800) | Narrow stile CVR | Not typical |
| Wood door in HM frame | Rim or mortise device | Surface vertical rod | Fire exit hardware with rated door |
The narrow stile row is where most mistakes happen. A standard rim device needs more rail than a narrow stile aluminum door has. Either use a device made for narrow stiles, or upgrade the leaf to medium stile.
Closers by Mounting and Frame
| Situation | Recommended closer and arm | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Interior HM door, pull-side mount OK | Surface closer, regular arm (LCN 4040XP, Dorma 8900, Norton 7500) | Most economical |
| Exterior or vandal-prone door | Surface closer, parallel arm, all-weather fluid | Push-side mount |
| Aluminum entrance, clean look | Concealed overhead closer | Needs header space |
| Door with overhead stop | Closer with integral stop arm | Avoid separate stop clash |
| Rated door | Rated closer, no hold-open unless alarm-released | Within label |
Compatibility check
Before ordering a closer, check door weight and exposure. A closer sized for an interior door will not latch an exposed lobby door against winter stack pressure.
Electrified Locking by Frame
| Frame | Electric strike | Mag-lock | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hollow metal welded | Yes, with frame prep or retrofit cut | Yes | Most flexible |
| Hollow metal knockdown | Yes, check jamb depth | Yes | Confirm anchoring |
| Aluminum storefront | Narrow strike for Adams Rite latches | Yes, common | Check rail space |
| Glass door, no frame | No | Yes, with glass bracket | Needs REX and alarm release |
Mag-locks on egress doors need a request-to-exit device and fire alarm release, and we list every electrified door as fail-safe or fail-secure in the written spec.
Lines Sourced Within 7 Business Days This Season
These are the commercial lines we are typically sourcing within 7 business days in the GTA this fall:
- Exit devices: Von Duprin, Adams Rite, Hager
- Closers: LCN, Dorma, Norton
- Locks: Schlage, Yale
- Pulls and plates: Rockwood, Trimco, Ives
- Access control: Kantech
Aluminum entrances from Kawneer, YKK AP and Vistawall, labelled fire-rated assemblies and special finishes such as dark bronze or satin brass follow manufacturer lead times, which we state in the written spec before you sign.
Why Matching to the Building Standard Matters
When a building already has a hardware standard, staying on it pays off for years. Keying stays on one master system, finishes match from door to door, and service parts are interchangeable. Last spring, a Financial District law office standardized hardware across its suite: lever sets, two electric strikes and reception pulls, sourced within a week and installed over a weekend, with a keying chart for building security.
Typical Hardware Pricing
| Scope | Typical range per door |
|---|---|
| Door closer | $450-$1,200 |
| Exit device | $900-$2,400 |
| Locks, pulls and electric strikes | $450-$2,800 |
| Access control door | $1,500-$6,500 |
